Frequently Asked Questions about Book Donations
We appreciate the community’s interest in supporting the Benzie Shores District Library through book donations. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive about donating books to the library.
Can I donate used books to the Library?
We understand the desire to give books a second life—but unfortunately, the Library is not able to accept donations of used books.
Due to limited space and staff resources, we are unable to process, sort, or store used book donations. Please note that any books left outside the Library or placed in the book drop will be recycled. We kindly ask that you do not leave materials without prior approval.
Looking for another option?
Used books in good condition may be taken to:
Blue Vase Book Exchange

Visit their website for more information.
Can I donate a new book to the Library's collection?
We love hearing from patrons about what they’d like to see in the library. If there’s a specific title, author, or subject you’d like us to consider, we’re happy to take suggestions.
That said, please know that all donated materials are reviewed according to the Library’s Collection Development Policy. This ensures that every item we add supports our mission, serves the needs of the community, and fits within our available space and budget.
If you’re interested in donating a new book for consideration, we encourage you to contact us first.
I’ve written a self-published book. Can I donate a copy?
First of all—congratulations on your work. We recognize the incredible creativity and effort behind self-published books, and we’re proud to have several self-published titles in our collection.
To be considered, self-published books must meet the same standards and criteria outlined in our Collection Development Policy. Our focus is on acquiring books that:
- Have broad appeal to the community
- Provide educational or cultural value
- Hold local or regional significance
What increases your book’s chance of being selected?
- A positive review in a professional review journal (such as Kirkus Reviews, Booklist, or Library Journal)
- Availability through a recognized library distributor such as Baker & Taylor or Ingram
- A clear target audience and a well-written summary
- Quality production, editing, and presentation
We do not consider paid reviews or customer reviews (like those found on Amazon or Goodreads).
